How to play

The goal is to leave your opponent with two pieces or with no legal moves. Just 4 steps to your first game.

01

Placing pieces

Each player has 9 pieces. Take turns placing them on the empty intersections of the lines on the board.

02

Build a mill

Three of your pieces in a row makes a "mill." For each one, you remove one of your opponent's pieces from the board.

03

Move your pieces

Once all pieces are placed, slide them to adjacent points. Break mills open and close them again.

04

Endgame

With three pieces left you can "fly" to any point. You lose if you're down to two pieces or have no moves.

About the game

Nine Men's Morris is one of the oldest board games in the world, known as far back as the Roman Empire. Despite its simple board, it demands precise calculation: it's not just about building your own mills, but about setting up a "swing" in advance — a pair of rows that open and close turn after turn.
