The oldest strategy game on 64 squares. Outplay your opponent and lead your army to checkmate the enemy king.
The goal is checkmate: attack your opponent's king so that it has no legal move left. Just 4 steps to your first game.
Each side has 16 pieces: a king, a queen, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights and 8 pawns across two ranks.
The rook moves in straight lines, the bishop on diagonals, the queen does both, the knight in an L-shape, the pawn forward.
Move onto an enemy piece's square to capture it. An attack on the king is check, and it must be answered.
If the king has no escape from check, that's checkmate and a win. A game can also end in a draw.
Chess is pure strategy with no element of chance: the outcome depends only on calculation and planning. Control the center, develop your pieces, look for combinations and tactical blows.
