Miss the bar and you are out
Last stand has no fixed length. Every round has a points bar, and it rises: five hundred in the first, seven hundred in the second, then two hundred more each round. Miss the bar and the game ends there.
The bar rises linearly: five hundred in the first round, seven hundred in the second, two hundred more each time. By round ten you need 2300, by fifteen 3300. In practice that means 'right country' stops being enough around round seven — after that you need the city.
Up to a bar of fifteen hundred, landing in the right part of a country is enough. Spending minutes here is wasted effort.
It sits next to the round number and tells you when to switch to slow, careful play.
Past the midpoint, a thousand points for the country is not an expense but insurance against elimination.
Early rounds forgive almost any answer in the right part of the world, but by the fifth you need a confident city. That is where hints pay off: a thousand points for the country sounds expensive, but it reliably keeps you alive once the bar approaches three thousand.
The main error is playing every round the same way. The first five forgive almost anything, so save your attention for round six onwards.
Do not bank surplus: scoring 2600 against a bar of 1500 gives you nothing later. The next bar depends only on the round number, not on how much you scored.

A direct hit is worth 5000 points per round, and the score falls off exponentially with distance. A five-round game is worth up to 25,000. Distances are measured on the server against its own copy of the locations, so a result cannot be forged from the browser.
