Five seconds to look, then from memory
Flash gives you five seconds with the panorama. Then a cover drops over it and the pin has to go on the map from memory. Five hundred points buys three more seconds, but every purchase eats into the result.
Five seconds is about one deliberate look. There is no time to read a sign, so the mode trains memory for the general picture rather than reading: ground colour, building type, vegetation, traffic side. The map stays available under the cover, and the pin goes down from memory.
A darting eye remembers nothing. Commit to the road and the horizon — the two most informative parts of the frame.
Zooming is pointless: it eats half your time, and the wide view carries more cues.
Memory fades in seconds. The first impression is usually more accurate than something reasoned half a minute later.
Five seconds is not enough to read a sign, so look at the whole rather than the text: the colour of the ground, the building type, the traffic side, the vegetation. Deciding in advance what you are looking for helps — your eye stops darting.
Three extra seconds cost five hundred points and sometimes pay off: if there was writing in the frame you did not manage to read, buying time almost always beats a thousand-kilometre miss.
Look at the edges rather than the centre: the middle is road, while the country cues — signage, poles, the verge — sit at the sides.

A direct hit is worth 5000 points per round, and the score falls off exponentially with distance. A five-round game is worth up to 25,000. Distances are measured on the server against its own copy of the locations, so a result cannot be forged from the browser.
