New York on Street View

How to recognise the city from a panorama

New York shows itself through traffic lights hung on wires across the street and fire hydrants at the kerb. On Manhattan the grid is almost perfectly regular, with house numbers counting outward from Fifth Avenue.

What the streets look like

The roadway is wider than the pavement, the centre line is yellow, and traffic lights hang on wires across the street. A hydrant sits at the kerb on almost every block, and older buildings carry external fire escapes.

How to tell it from lookalikes

Monolingual signage and yellow cabs separate it from Toronto, where signs repeat in French and have rounded corners. From Chicago it differs by density and the absence of an elevated railway over the street.

Useful details

The Manhattan grid is nearly perfect: avenues run north to south, streets across, and numbering grows outward from Fifth Avenue. A house number pins the block.
