How to recognise the city from a panorama

The UAE shows Arabic script beside English on every road sign, a sandy tint over everything and eight-lane highways. Dubai adds towers rising straight out of empty lots.

What the streets look like

Everything carries a sandy tint, highways run six to eight lanes, and empty plots sit between the towers. Vegetation is irrigated and palms are planted in rows.

How to tell it from lookalikes

The density of skyscrapers and the elevated metro separate it from Doha and Abu Dhabi. From Cairo it differs by the absence of old building stock and the state of the roads.

Useful details

Signs are green with Arabic above and English below. Plates are white with the emirate's emblem, and taxis are sand-coloured with a coloured roof.
